New knowledge about dental diseases and oral ecology is awarded
The 2006 Yngve Ericsson prize for research in preventive odontology has been awarded jointly to Professor Adrian Lussi, Bern, Switzerland and Professor Jorma Tenovuo, Åbo, Finland. The prize of 400 000 SEK ( 42 500 Euro) is to be shared equally between the two recipients, and will be presented in November at Karolinska Institutet´s Installation and Prize Ceremony in Stockholm.
Professor Adrian Lussi is from the University of Bern, Switzerland. In particular he is acknowledged for his research into dental caries and a growing clinical problem, namely dental erosion. Professor Lussi has systematically and consistently analysed the mechanisms underlying the process of dental erosion, its development and its prevention and this has led to clinically applicable preventive measures. Moreover he has pioneered the development and testing of new methods for detection and quantification of early carious lesions and has conducted numerous studies in the field of caries prevention. As editor and author of the first international textbook on dental erosion, he has ensured that knowledge of the subject is widely disseminated and readily accessible.
Professor Jorma Tenovuo is from University of Turku, Finland. Through his research into the different defence mechanisms of the oral cavity, he has contributed to an increased understanding of both scientific and clinical aspects of dental and oral diseases. Through systematic and innovative studies of the various salivary defence mechanisms against pathogenic micro-organisms, Professor Tenovuo has made an outstanding contribution to knowledge of the oral ecology. This has in turn been translated into a number of clinical applications for prevention of dental and oral diseases. Moreover, Professor Tenovuo has conducted many clinical studies of preventive methods. Through his contribution to a number of highly-regarded textbooks, he has been instrumental in further disseminating this knowledge.
The Yngve Ericsson Prize, previously known as The Patent Revenue Fund´s Prize for research in preventive odontology, is awarded once every three years, in acknowledgement of outstanding contributions to prevention of oral diseases. Established in 1963, The Patent Revenue Fund for Research in Preventive Odontology is founded on royalties from patents (primarily patents for addition of fluoride to dentifrices to prevent or arrest dental caries). Each year, the fund awards grants totalling around 1.5 million SEK in support of research into prevention of dental and oral diseases.
The prize will be presented at Karolinska Institutet´s Installation and Prize Ceremony at the Berwald Hall, Stockholm, on November 2, 2006.
